The sliding movements of components, i.e. a piston in a tube, risks metal to metal contact which will damage and score the surface and eventually cause a “seize up,” particularly if the components are subjected to side load forces. Piston and rod therefore need to be supported by guiding elements such as wear rings, wear bands, guide rings or bearings.
