When there is very little or no motion of the mating assembly parts upon the seal, a static condition exists. Usually an initial compression or periodic compressions typify static seal.
When compressed, as with an O-ring or a seal, outward expansion results in the horizontal direction as a pressure relief, and this change needs to be accommodated in the housing design to avoid an overfill of the groove into which the seal fits. The groove or seal housing must therefore always be wider than the O-Ring or seal itself. The recommended compression range for static seals is 10% - 30%.
