Composite Bearings

At AHP Seals we manufacture a range of advanced composites materials. These are fiber reinforced, plastic laminates which are ideally suited to highly loaded bearing applications in a variety of environments.

AHP Seals composite materials offer engineers a real and effective alternative to phosphur bronze, with many advantages over this and the other traditional bearing materials sometimes used in its place. Our Grade has been specifically formulated for marine environment applications.

Finished components include: structural bearings, washers, wear rings, spherical bearings, wear pads, wear strips, rollers, and bushings including custom components.

All AHP Seals grades are laminates composed of synthetic fabrics which are impregnated by thermosetting resins and solid lubricant fillers. Our grades are non-toxic and can be used in food processing machinery in contact with food/drink. In addition most AHP Seals grades can be used down at cryogenic temperatures. Health and Safety Data Sheets are available upon request.

Advantages over Phosphor Bronze

AHP Seals composite bearings offer engineers a real cost effective alternative to phosphor bronze and older traditional materials sometimes used in its place. AHP Seals materials have the ability to take high loads without compressing out, and are self lubricating so if servicing is neglected our materials will continue to perform. The self lubricating properties permit further value engineering by allowing the removal of greasing systems. Our products can also operate in dry, gritty environments, hence preventing the formation of grease/grit lapping past which can abrade shafts to destruction.

Advantages over Nylon

Nylon materials are sold under various trade names, but nylons are limited to relatively lightly loaded situations.

AHP Seals materials exhibit a far higher load capacity than nylons and are dimensionally stable in fluids. Absorption is less than 0.1%, compared to nylon at up to 9%. This low level of absorption means that there is negligible swelling and degradation of properties. It also means you can run with tighter running clearances which increases the available bearing area and excludes to a greater extent, the ingress of foreign particles (which in the case of nylon get embedded in and proceed to abrade the shaft).

AHP Seals properties will remain stable no matter where in the world they are used, whereas those of nylon can be affected by the glass transition temperature.

Advantages over Hardened Steel

Our enhanced load grade material, L18, has been designed to exceed the limits of bronze and go into the load areas of hardened steel, with the benefits of savings on shaft materials and grease, and reduced service costs.
